Fishin' with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - July 29th
High pressure being nearby made for some slick calm seas as of late, allowing boaters to get offshore with little worries. But with the water temp nearing 90 again, would the fish be biting?
Fishin' with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - July 22nd
The best way to beat the heat is to head to water, and that's what Capt. Jonnie and Bob did this week. With a steady east wind blowing, it made for some good fishing conditions.
Fishin' with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - July 15th
Fishing can get slow at times during the summer, especially when the water gets really warm. But recently the water temperature has cooled a bit, and that's kept the action hot in the bay.
Fishin' with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - July 1st
There were plenty of boats in the bay Thursday, fishing and having fun. Most of them were participating in a special fishing tournament where everyone was a winner.
Fishin' with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - June 24th
This week Bob had the opportunity to go offshore -- WAY offshore, that is. Not is search of sheens and tarballs, but something very new to him and much cleaner. Some anglers refer to them as natural springs, while other define them as deep caves. Whatever the case, they found a wide variety of species swimming around them.

Fishin with Bob & Captain Jonnie - June 17th
There has been lots of talk lately about the recent sightings of the gentle giants known as whale sharks in the area. Suncoast anglers and fishing guides have been sending in photos and videos to ABC 7 of these huge fish swimming just off our shores, and Capt. Jonnie Walker and our own Bob Harrigan were fortunate to spot one of them, too.
Fishin' with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - June 11th
Capt. Jonnie took a much-needed week off from fishing this week. Considering all the fish he's been catching as of late, he deserves it. So instead Bob went out to see what was biting in Manatee County waters.
Fishin' with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - June 4th
The weather has been perfect for boating this week; light winds and calms seas. So it was a great time to head offshore a bit, and who knows...maybe catch a glimpse of those whale sharks that have been swimming through Suncoast waters recently. Bob didn't get to see one of those, but here's what he did see.

Fishin' with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - May 27th
Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer here in America. It's one of the busiest weekends for boating along the Suncoast. It just so happens that this is also National Safe Boating Week, and the U.S. Coast Guard was putting on a show to kick things off.
Fishin' with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - May 20th
This week we venture out to the artificial reef named after Allen Fisher. It's about a mile straight out from New Pass in Sarasota and is made up of the old New Pass bridge. The fishing has been hot there as long as the skies stay cloudy.
Fishin' with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - May 13th
Well with the strong east wind all week, it's been difficult to get offshore and get to the big fish. But Jonnie says you can catch some big ones near shore as well -- all you have to do is find the bait and the fish will be nearby.
Fishin' with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - May 6th
Folks all along the Suncoast are on pins and needles waiting to see what's happening with this devastating oil slick in the gulf. It's already shut down 7,000 square miles of fishing in the northern gulf, and more closures may be on the way. Bob paid a visit to the Cortez fishing village to see what their thinking is.
Fishin' with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - April 29th
The recent oil disaster in the Gulf Of Mexico is weighing on the minds of many Suncoast residents. The talk of drilling just offshore of Siesta Key and Longboat Key gets some people understandably upset, but none more so than folks who make a living on the waters like Capt. Jonnie Walker.
Fishin' with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - April 22nd
Just a few weeks ago there wasn't a kingfish to be found in Suncoast waters. But the tide has turned, and we mean in a big way. The news of the king's return has not fallen on deaf ears.
Fishin' with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - April 15th
The saying "better late than never" holds true for the king mackerel. This migratory fish is late in arriving this year due to the cold; but they're back!

With the water temperatures finally getting past 70 degrees, schools of baitfish are starting to show up, to the delight of birds, fish and anglers. With the cold harsh winter behind us, it seems like everything is biting now in the bay.

The spring fishing is really kicking in, now that the weather has turned, with redfish, trout and pompano being caught. The kingfishing has been slow going however. Folks who put on the Sertoma Kingfish Tournament are hoping things improve in time for their big event on April 9th-10th.

Fishin' with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - March 25th
This past winter we broke all kinds of records with the cold -- you have to go all the way back to 1940 to find a colder one. Now that it's over and warmer temperatures are moving in, Jonnie says the fishing should be picking up for this Spring. And some fine folks from Cincinnati were hoping he was right.
Fishin' with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - March 18th
The extreme winter is just about over, and it can't end soon enough for area captains, who have had to battle the rain, cold, wind and struggling economy. This past Wednesday was no different.
Fishin' with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - March 11th

Fishin with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - March 4th
Just like clockwork another cold front put the kibosh on Bob and Capt. Jonnie's fishing trip this week. Just too windy and cold. But that didn't stop some determined anglers who were visiting from up north from giving it a try.
Fishin' with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - February 25th
Bob and Capt. Jonnie had only a small window of opportunity to get some fishing in this week before the nasty weather moved in. Most everyone is ready for this extreme winter to end and spring to begin. None more so than Capt. Jonnie, who's business is noticeably slower, due mainly to the cold.
Fishin' with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - February 18th
When the fishing gets tough, the tough get fishing. Capt. Jonnie and Bob braved the cold conditions out on the water and put our focus on a fish that marches to a different beat.
Fishin' with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - February 11th
The weather's been miserable for fishing so far in 2010, and this week was no different. Cold weather along the Suncoast has chased away most of Jonnie's clients, so Bob asked his 1st Mate Emma if she wanted to give it a shot, and she was game.
Fishin' with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - February 4th
This week the weather got the best of us again, as the winds were too strong on Wednesday. So Bob decided to see what was happening at a familiar bait shop, now hidden beneath the Ringling Bridge.

According to Capt. Jonnie, the fishing is slowly getting better, as the water temperatures continue warm up gradually. Now he says if only the economy would heat up so more anglers book more trips with area captains.
Fishin' with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - January 21st
Slowly the water temperatures are getting back to more normal readings after Florida's big freeze of 2010. Not only did the cold weather keep a lot of anglers away from the water, it also killed a lot of fish. For the first time this decade, Jonnie and Bob made it out to see if anything would bite in the frigid waters of Sarasota Bay.
Fishin with Bob & Capt. Jonnie - January 14th
ABC 7's Josh Taylor showed us eariler this week how the extremely cold water temperatures are taking a toll on the marine life here along the Suncoast. The water will take a while to warm up.
